Mason's Birthday...

We had Mason's party on the same day as his birthday, but we still wanted to do a few special things before our guests arrived!  As per Pinterest, I wanted to start a tradition of having balloons fill his room when he woke up on his birthday.

I love this picture!

I don't even know what he was doing...

Then Nick decided to put Mason plus all the balloons in his crib, he loved it!

Of course, he had to have birthday pancakes!

We had a wonderful morning just the three of us, and we are still in shock how quickly this year has gone by.  It's crazy to me that I have a one year old!

I will share his party soon!  We had a wonderful time, and it was great to have so many people to celebrate my little man's birthday!

Decisions, Decisions

The hardest decision I have had to make thus far as a parent was who would watch Mason when I went back to work.  We are not fortunate enough for me to stay home with him, we do not have a relative close by who doesn't work to watch him, so what do you do??

This was extremely hard for me.  I mean I never really went to daycare, my mom was always home with my little brother and I.  I also read a lot of studies showing that daycare is actually exceptionally beneficial for babies.  Regardless of how I was feeling, the decision had to be made because I was going back to work.

We learned that you can't wait around when it comes to really good daycares because they fill up fast.  Nick and I choose a couple to go and visit and speak with.  We liked them both but didn't LOVE either.  To be honest, I don't think I was going to LOVE any of them.  However, after much debate (i.e. stalling on my part) we made a decision!

Well, when we called to sign Mason up, they were full.  We were going to be put on the waitlist.  My heart sank.  Luckily, we had a good back up in another place we had visited, but I still wasn't thrilled about the situation.  We went ahead and got Mason registered for a daycare near Nick's work in the Galleria area.

A few days later we were pulling into the drive and saw our neighbors outside.  They are really nice, and they have the cutest little blonde, curly headed boy named Thomas who was 3 at the time.  In making conversation we asked if they had a good babysitter for future reference.  Holly, our neighbor, misunderstood and thought we meant daycare type person.  We didn't correct, took the name and number, and went inside baffled by what had just happened.

We figured it couldn't hurt to call and see what it was all about.  We trust our neighbors, Thomas is still alive and wonderful, and this may be an answer to a prayer we didn't realize we both had.  So, Nick called and Ida agreed to meet with us.  Funny thing, she called Holly after she talked to Nick to ask about us.  She wanted to make sure we were ok, just like we wanted to check her out.  We went to her house and met her and her husband Steve.  This was the most amazing experience ever!  I instantly knew Mason was in the right place.  At the time, Mason was only 6 weeks old, and she picked him up and he smiled and seemed so happy!  From that point on we have never looked back!

I am writing this because, while so many out there are luckily enough to be with there babies everyday, some of us are not.  Those of us that can't be there every minute of every day need people like Ida to love our babies, take care of them, and treat them like their own.  This is exactly what Ida and Steve do for my wonderful baby.  Mason is lucky enough to have an extra set of grandparents who love him as their own.  I am also writing this because Ida asked us to bring Mason over once he got his hair cut.  We went over there and as soon as we opened the door and Mason walked in he walked right to her arms up and gave her a hug!  She was so excited to see him, and the joy on both of their faces melted my heart.  Ida and Steve, better known to Mason as MoMo and PoPo, are the best people I could have ever asked for to take care of my baby.  Ida also has her grandson, Jacob, and even though he is 4, he adores Mason!  I love that Mason already seems to have an older brother to take care of him, play with him, and teach him things!  In home daycare has worked for us, and I highly suggest it to any parents that have to work and put their babies in some type of daycare.

If you made it through all of that, here are a few pictures!

He is learning Spanish, has an entire other family, and is spoiled like crazy.  Also, Mason comes home with dirt on his clothes, food in his hair, and most important of all a smile on his face!

Fresh Cut!

A week or so before Mason's birthday he got his first hair cut.  I'll admit it was getting long, but it was so cute!  Nick however had one too many people tell him how cute our little girl was or ask hold she was.  He then decided we had to cut the hair.  I swear I dress him like a boy!  A very cute, stylish boy at that, but with the girl comment Nick said the hair needed to be cut.  So, here are some pics of the hair cut, and my handsome little BOY!!

I didn't get an after picture right after the hair cut, but here is his fresh new 'do!  Still handsome as ever, but he looks older which makes me sad...

Mason: 12 Months

It is so surreal that my baby is one!  The year has truly flown by, and it is amazing how much he has grown and come into his own.

Sleep:
- Naps are starting to vary...with me being home now, Mason is able to sleep later and he has started to get the hang of it.  This means that some days he is able to skip his morning nap since he wakes up so much later.  Those days he has only been taking one nap that is about 3 hours.  Other days he still does his 2 naps that are each 2 hours.
- At night he is sleeping about 12 hours.  Some days it's 13-13.5 and others it is only 11, but typically he goes a good 12.  It is heavenly!
- He goes to bed between 7:30-8:00 which is a little later but again with me being home he can nap a little later into the afternoon and then stay up later.

Feeding:
- We are so close to being done with bottles.  He is down to one a day!  This boy has been a champ with sippy cups and straws.
- We also just started whole milk instead of formula.  We really have the best baby ever!  He just drank the milk like it was no big deal.  No need to transition or mix with formula.
- The Dr. said he needs 16-24oz.  We just started, and he is drinking about 20 oz. a day.
- He loves to eat!!  He eats 3 meals and has 2 snacks throughout the day.

Weight and Length:
- 23 lbs. 9oz. (65%) and 30.5" (75%)

Diapers and Clothes:
- Mostly 6-12 and 9-12. He still seems to be on the smaller side of clothes even though people always seem to think he is older than he is.
- Size 3 in diapers still...we prefer Huggies little movers.

Personality/Likes/Misc.:
- He has just started to actually watch tv.  Usually in the evenings we will turn on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse while he has milk, and he will watch it for 5-10 mins.  He loves the Small Potatoes that come on afterward and sing.
- I don't know if I have mentioned this before, but for the last 2 months Mason has been getting breathing treatments at night. He had been coughing really bad at night.  During the day everything was fine and normal, but after sleeping for 3 hours or so at night he would start coughing and couldn't seem to stop and was wheezing a little in between the coughs. The dr. said it was asthma triggered by some allergen and the breathing treatment should help.  He doesn't necessarily have asthma but is allergic to something which is causing the asthma like symptoms when his lung relax and then become irritated. When we went in his for 12 month check-up, I told her it was working great and the coughing at night had pretty much stopped.  She said that reassured her it was more of an allergy and she wanted to try a prescription allergy medicine that would also treat asthma.  This way we could cut out his breathing treatment and the Zyrtec! Hopefully this works and the breathing treatment will be only used if he was to have a coughing fit or asthma attack.  I am really excited about this and hope it works!  Poor baby hates the breathing treatments.

- Walking is a thing of the past, and he is almost a runner now!
- He has lots of new words, but his favorites include keys for cookies and yeah!

I am loving have all summer to spend with my little man.  It is crazy to me how much has changed in a year and how quickly it has gone by.  I love watching my baby grow into his own person, and I couldn't be a prouder mom!!

Practice Makes Perfect!

Lately, we have been prepping for Mason's birthday.  I know he won't remember it, but I want to start him off knowing that it is his special day that is all about him!  Plus, it is my opportunity to have full control over every detail without any complaints from my little man...needless to say, I am taking full advantage!  We have been practicing the cookies/desserts and his smash cake and have finally perfected them for the most part.

Mustache and tie cookies...they will be beautifully iced for the party.

Smash cake! Fits perfectly on his personalized stand!

We figured, if I practiced baking it then it was only fair for Mason to practice eating it!!

Also, I have been working on several projects so that I am not trying to do it all at once right before his party.  We have been purchasing things a little here and there, so other than the food we pretty much have everything we need already. Here's a little sneak peek at my baby's first birthday...

I am just learning to sew and this was one of my first projects!  My mom did help some though.
Mason has even been practicing 'blowing out his candle'!  It is the cutest thing...we have been working on it, and now when we tell him to blow out his candles he gets excited and blows!

Mason:11 Months

In just one short month my little man will be a year old.  It is crazy the things that can happen in a year.  It is so hard to believe that this time last year I was this giant pregnant teacher hoping not to go into labor at school.  Now, I have this amazing little person who is almost 1!

Sleep:
- For the most part naps are the same with him napping 2 times a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon.  They each last about two hours.  Lately, though, he has only been taking one 2-2 1/2 hour nap.
- At night he is back down to 11 hours...we can't complain, but it would be nice to get sleep past 6:30 am.
- He goes to bed between 7:15-7:30 and wakes up between 6:30-7:00 most days.

Feeding:
-He has 4 5oz. bottles, and then he will eat anywhere from 1-4 oz.  before bed and 3 solid meals.
- He has snacks throughout the day as well.  He loves to feed himself!
- We are trying to get him to use a sippy cup more, and he has actually drank formula from a sippy cup instead of a bottle a couple of times.
- Baby food doesn't happen anymore!  This kid loves real food, and he loves to feed himself even more.  We put food on his fork and he will feed it to himself!

Weight and Length:
- 22.5 lbs. and around 29"
- We won't know for sure until his 12 month check-up

Diapers and Clothes:
- Mostly 6-12 and 9-12 and 9 month. Ocasionally a 12 month will fit. He still seems to be on the smaller side of clothes even though people always seem to think he is older than he is.
- Size 3 in diapers still...we prefer Huggies little movers.

See the food in his mouth?  That was the only way we could get a laying down picture!
Also, he always crosses his ankles now...I think it is so cute!  Anytime he is sitting, he has his little legs crossed at the ankles.

Personality/Likes/Miscellaneous:
- He is a speed crawler and gets wherever he wants really fast!
- He has started to stand up on his own without anything to pull up on.
- He has taken his first steps!!  We have only made it to 3 before he quits, but at least he is trying !
- He is clapping his hands and waving.
- He is such a genuinely happy baby...he laughs, talks, and smiles ALL day!  We are so lucky and blessed!

Love his monthly photo shoots!  It is amazing how much changes from month to month!

Driving at the grocery store.

Tailgating at the Dynamo game!

It is the time of year for Sno-Cones!!
